A Lesson for April Fool'southward Day

From Paul's concluding letter of the alphabet, written to his beloved Timothy, we read,

"Make every effort to come up to me soon; for Demas, having loved this nowadays world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica ;" (2 Timothy 4:nine-10, NASB)

In that location is in this short text a certain sadness conveyed from the apostle Paul. Paul is in Rome, in prison house, nether the watchful eye of the Roman guard. He greatly desires that Timothy "come . . . soon," and information technology is axiomatic that Paul is aware that his time on earth is curt (ii Timothy 4:half dozen-eight). In this state, he experiences the presence of Luke, a devoted fellow laic, a co-laborer who is now the simply ane with him (2 Timothy 4:11). Luke is the merely one with him because some other co-worker named "Demas . . . has deserted" him.

Who Was Demas?

Demas had been a cherished co-laborer with Paul. He was a co-worker in spreading the gospel bulletin of Jesus the Christ (Philemon 24; Colossians 4:14). Demas seemed to be the real deal. But the Scripture tells that at some indicate during Paul's fourth dimension in Rome, Demas made it known that he "loved this present earth," and and then he left Paul's presence and headed to Thessalonica.

The Greek word for deserted is "shamayim" and it speaks of "letting someone down." In both the KJV and NKJV, the word is translated as "forsaken."   Demas had forsaken Paul, left him, while Paul was awaiting execution.

Paul tells the states that "Demas . . . loved this present world." Kenneth Wuest, a former Greek instructor at Moody Bible Establish, wrote that Demas "had set up a high value on this present age." The give-and-take for "world" here is aion, improve translated "age." It speaks of, in an ethical sense, the "aims and hopes and aspirations" that define the "current time." Information technology speaks of "the spirit of" those "who are living alienated and apart from God." As someone has written, "the spirit of the age had gotten hold of him."

This is a hard passage, 1 that should cause us intermission. As much as it is a distressing report it also is an alarming i! For we come to the agreement that this world we live in can serve equally a powerful tool of seduction that can actually draw a person away from the work of Christ. And this "love" of the "present historic period" can be even more inviting when conditions are not and then favorable.

Do you know about Demas? After reading about this man these words from John's beginning letter come swiftly to my listen,

"Do not dearest the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the globe, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Male parent, only is from the globe ." (I John 2:15-16 - NASB)

And as he commands those he is addressing to "stop loving the globe," take special note of John's refrain,

"And the world is passing away, and too its lusts " (I John 2:17- NASB)

What a fool Demas was.  He turned his dorsum on God, choosing rather to embrace the trappings of "the age" rather than to reap the eternal blessings of Christ. It can happen! Was he actually ever saved? Was the "love" for "the historic period" always in his eye? This "Demas" certainly causes i to ask such questions. And this "Demas" also serves equally one who causes us to examine ourselves.

Have a good day brethren . . . and let information technology be said of you lot and I that, by God'due south grace, nosotros not be establish to be as Demas.
